The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Grief & Addiction Intensive

The vast majority of addicts and alcoholics in recovery identify death and other personal losses as a trigger for the establishment of their addiction.  They also identify death of a loved one as the most likely cause for relapse.  This Intensive will address both prevention and recovery aspects of addiction.

Objectives of this Intensive
1. An overview of the nature of grief, the difference between grief and mourning, and the factors that differentiate grief responses.
2. What is the connection between unaddressed grief and addiction or compulsive behaviours?
3. THE GOOD:  empowerment, trust, personal boundaries
4. THE BAD & THE UGLY:  Self-pity, enabling, victimization
5. Addressing grief within 12-step recovery programs
6. Preparing addicts for their next personal loss

Professionals and volunteers who work with youth or adults in addiction or compulsive behaviour treatment programs or counselling, school and post-secondary staff, family members of addicts, mental health workers, justice system workers, preventive and recovery counsellors, clergy and pastoral care workers, chaplains
